Should pet insurance
THE COST of pet insurance varies widely from region to region and pet
to pet. Veterinary bills can amount to many thousands of pounds in
some circumstances. Those who believe every pet owner should take
out insurance argue it is part of the responsibility that goes with having
a companion animal and reducing suffering. Others say poorer people
should not be precluded from pet ownership because of the cost of
insurance, and that there are non-insurance options for treating a pet.

No! I self-insured my dog. I saved
money every month specifically
for any vet bills. If she needed any
treatment I had the money saved
to pay it.
Yes. It’s all about being a responsible pet owner. Have them spayed,
neutered and insured.
No, the problem with making it
mandatory is that the cost of
insurance will rise and so will vets’
costs. The cost of microchipping
went up when the law changed.
Yes, as long as the government control the costs. At the moment they
are ridiculous with some companies.
There is no need for pet insurance
if you look after your animals, from
behaviour to food to wellbeing. If
you have an animal with known
problems, then, yes, you will need
help, but that shouldn’t come from
insurance. Vets should offer free
health care advice and check-ups
and payment plans for animals that
are likely to need more treatment,
or a set price that covers a level of
care, just like dentists do.
No. I am a responsible owner. My
dog is microchipped, spayed and
vaccinated each year. I have funds
to pay for vet bills should they
arise, so why should I be penalised
each month paying an insurance
premium. Bad owners should not
impact the ones who can afford to
look after their animals well.
Yes. Even the nicest and most
well behaved of dogs can cause
an accident or injury whilst out in
public. Also, insurance protects
against unexpected vets bills, so
you can afford the best treatment
for your pet if it gets a serious
illness. I don’t understand why
you wouldn’t insure your pets.
